The unexpected SalesBully pre-launch results

The reason we pre-launched SalesBully yesterday to our list was to test things before we did a full-scale launch.

Here’s the results and the secret bit I couldn’t tell you until now.

We did the math.  Based on open-rates on emails, the size of our list and figuring for above-average conversion rates, we wouldn’t even sell 100 copies.

And yet, I made 250 copies available to make sure that everyone who wanted to could get the chance to pre-order SalesBully.

As I write this, there are only 1,114 people on the SalesBully email list who got the secret order link.

We were not expecting to or planning on selling out.

To do so, a whopping 22% of those people would have to open the email, visit the site, read the sales letter and buy.

With many people happy to get a conversion rate of 2% AFTER people arrived at their site, selling 250 copies of anything to an email list of 1,114 is not only unrealistic, it is darn near impossible.

And things did not go as well as planned.

Despite my perfectionist ways, there was a typo that sent everyone to a misspelled domain.  That didn’t make us look good.

Then, those who did come back went into an endless loop, each of them hitting our server dozens of times and ending up on the wrong page after.  During this, we couldn’t even connect to the server to fix it.

That made us look worse.

(This is exactly why we pre-tested the site before letting affiliates send mass traffic.)

When the more persistent and forgiving of those people finally got to the site, we learned that people weren’t quite getting what SalesBully did.

We got several comments where people only thought it was useful for large launches.  They focused on one single feature because I didn’t get across to them well enough that SalesBully also improves your sales funnel so that you can make more money per visitor, even if you have very low traffic.

So, with all that going against us, what were the results?

We let one affiliate promote to a small list to test that aspect too.  That person was Tim Erway who, along with his partner Jesse Jameson, helped us with SalesBully.

I just got off the phone with Tim.  His own numbers show that 25% of the people who clicked the link in the email he sent out, opted in to our list, read the sales page and bought the product.

This is an unbelievably high number, far higher than our record-setting GoTryTHIS launch… and he emailed out just before the launch, so I didn’t have a chance to “pre-sell” them at all.

Those results show how well SalesBully works.  Even with small numbers, glitches in the sales process, a sales letter with no testimonials and pre-ordering a product that they won’t get for a week, using these techniques resulted in astounding sales.

No, we didn’t sell out.  There are currently 82 copies left and 4 sold while writing this letter.

However, we surpassed our expected sales by far.  We also learned what we needed to and gave everyone ample opportunity to get the discount.

So, even if there are still copies left, tonight I’m going stop sales and switch the site to the pre-launch state so that I can start sending out affiliate links tomorrow without confusing their lists with talk of pre-release discounts.

Thank you for everyone who participated.  I would very much like to hear your feedback about the sales process and the information I sent by email.  If you have something to share, please post it at as a comment here.  I read every comment.

And if SalesBully wasn’t for you, I hope you’ll stick with us as we continue to innovate and come out with new software products to help you make more money in Internet Marketing.

If you haven’t and want to check things out, you can still visit www.SalesBully.com (and even buy it) until later tonight.

Take care,
John.

P.S.  Totally unrelated: Tonight, after a four or five year year break, I’m starting to teach martial arts again.  A new Yoshinkan Aikido dojo has opened up here and I’m the big kahuna.  ;-)

John,

That’s remarkable considering all the hassles, even though I didn’t get to experience those same problems, I was impressed at how the whole new process works. I accidentally came across your second chance page after exiting the main one and got to see how truly this Salesbully actually works especially after the time ran out.. :( Glad I was able to use my work’s computer to pre order it…phew…..

John, I truly see the power of this. I already knew of the methods that salesbully deploys to increase your sales. The problem was implementing them successfully and easily with each of my products. So when I read about Salesbully, I instantly knew of the power that it could bring to increase my sales dramatically.

Thanks John! (especially for the discount)

I prefer to remain anonymous save for my IP address, but I’m fairly certain your readers won’t see this comment anyway.

I say this because I have posted to your blog before and, as I expected, the comment did not get posted. Certainly, we wouldn’t want your list to know that some readers don’t fall hook, line, and sinker.

Having said that, I believe that you’ve talked WAY too much about your pre-sales mistakes. (Of course, this is only an outsider’s perspective, since I’m not the IM professional that you folks are. ) An open expression of humility is fine, but detailing your mistakes and then trying to make your product look like a sure thing because one person’s list “resulted in astounding sales” .

You have lost credibility in a number of your readers, believe it or not, because you were too eager to get your pre-sales pitch out without “crossing all your t’s and dotting all your i’s”.

Hopefully, constructive criticism won’t be misconstrued as anything other than what it is.

Hi John,

I want to thank you for making SalesBully available to the public.

Last night I was surfing the Net for something totally different when I accidentally found your blog at www.JohnReel.com

There I followed a link from your old UltimateOTO script… and to my surprise I got redirected to your SalesBully.com landing page.

Is the Universe trying to tell me something?

I signed up, fully aware of the LIVE psychological tactics that where being played on me, loved it, and bought it.

I can’t tell you how much more money SalesBully is going to make me in my next product launch!

Thanks,
Paul

Hi John - it would be great if those of us who bought can launch some sites that use SB, so you have more test cases going into the official launch. Will we get a head start?

Hi John,

How often do you hear from your customers telling you that they actually enjoyed handing you money :)

Seriously, I have great confidence in your software because I have been using GoTryThis for a while. I kind of expected this to be good and was looking forward to picking this up. The sale in a sense was already made with GoTryThis and yesterday’s pre-order was really just a performance for me to watch.

Yes, there were some bugs in the page but all in all, I think it went well. I was soaking in the sales letter quite unlike others, so kudos to you :)

For a rabid market like Internet marketing, I think it will definitely do well. Can I request that you release possible ways to implement SalesBully with other niches? Perhaps blueprints or templates for other niche areas.

Thanks again. It was by far the most enjoyable sales experience so far.

Hi Anonymous (Harry).

We let through most posts, including negative ones, but some we don’t for a variety of reasons.

The whole point, which perhaps I didn’t get across well enough, is that by testing things and taking the chance with our OWN sales, we have the opportunity to fix things before we distribute our software.

There was no other way to do a large scale test other than to do it, and I didn’t want you to discover any issues when it was your income on the line.

People saw that there were some glitches, and I’m not afraid to tell you that. I think that I would be doing you a disservice if I didn’t go through this process and be honest about it. (Of course it would have been nicer if I could report that it went perfectly!)

In any case, even if I don’t publish a comment, we appreciate your feedback. I read and try to learn from all of them. I hope most people understand that we went through this process for our clients benefit, so that they got software that was tested in the trenches so-to-speak.

Thank you,
John.

Hi John,

I didn’t get to the site until around 4:30pm so didn’t get to experience all the ups and downs. Just a great sales letter and a super marketing tool. It was kinda fun seeing the numbers go from 120 when I started reading the sales letter down to 118 before I got to the end and grabbed my copy. :)

Thanks and have a super day!

Your VRE Empire

John,

You must know by now that you have a pretty loyal following. Most of us will buy just about anything you put in the pipe because you do provide real value.

Keep up the great work.

John: I too really enjoyed reading the sales letter and getting to see SalesBully working in real time. I look forward to getting to learn more from you and other members and to your bonus call. And yes, I hit the “so you are testing me” page with the four minute timer. That pushed me over the edge to buy event though I had the original sales page open in a Firefox browser just to make sure I did not miss out.

But a word about the graphic design of the site. It is GREAT. Did you do it yourself or did you have a graphic design pro? Ya, some of the drawings were a little how should I say “cheezy” but that added to the effect. I would look forward to learning more on how you made it happen on your training calls.

I agree with one of the other posts that having several well designed templates that could be modified along with a blog template like this one would really add to the value of the software.

GREAT SITE! And fun to see it in action.

Hi John

Guess I just crept under the wire before it was too late!

Yes, Ethan is right - GTT pre-sold me on SB :-)

I’ve been a little confused (what’s new?) about all the different emails that came out of your system after I’d bought - including a ticket raised on your support desk, quoting my purchase (and which generated an error when I tried to login and open it).

I’m also a little confused about the timing of the launch and the release of SB to those of us who have pre-ordered.

Am I right in thinking that we can install and test SB on 19th June, and that the full launch will be on 26th June?

Also, when do we get our affiliate links to promote SB?

If you prefer to reply privately, that’s fine by me :-)

Hey John
How can i become a salesbully affiliate?

Mike:

The graphics were done by a close friend of mine, who is an amazing artist. She did them in the style I asked for and to my exact specifications, while I watched. I’ve never had an easier time working with an artist.

Since she is in school, and a single Mom, she doesn’t have time to take on work for people, though if anyone is looking for an artist, I can pass the request to her. She is highly trained and can work in many medium and styles.

Ian:

Our support system has always had that problem and we’re replacing it with one we designed and wrote from scratch. I hope it will be ready for the real launch and when we give out the software.

I’ll respond to your other questions in an email to people who bought… once we’ve 100% decided on the answer.

Hi John,

I’m looking forward to getting my copy and putting it to use.

I wonder why the countdown timer, before SalesBully became available, was about 8 minutes slow. My computer clock is accurate.

Best wishes,

Frank

John, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole sales process and the entertaining style in which the sales letter was written (and illustrated)… as Paul said, I too, was “fully aware of the LIVE psychological tactics that where being played on me, loved it, and bought it.”

I’ve also enjoyed the informative blog posts about SB and am looking forward to being further enlightened on the call.

Thank you so very much for making your incredible software available for those of us who don’t have very deep pockets ;)

I got the email about the launch and watched the countdown on a firefox screen from 37 minutes on down. I noticed that the countdown was several minutes off from my computer’s clock, so I extrapolated the difference and clicked the pre-sell page link… and got the page with the misspelled domain name.

I immediately knew something wasn’t right and saw the domain name misspelling, highlighted and re-typed it and after a couple of tries, ended up on the pre-sell sales page.

(I also noticed when I re-checked the countdown to pre-sell that it was showing a negative figure… )

To succeed in the ever-changing, sometimes “wild ‘n’ wooly” world of I.M., you’ve got to differentiate yourself (and your products), which is something you’ve shown that you are quite capable of doing.

I missed out on GTT but signed up for info. on SB– and yes, I’m also on Tim’s list, so between the two of you, you’ve got me covered!

Once I had purchased my copy, I then spent several minutes soaking in your excellent sales letter, watching the numbers change and imagining how SB is going to work similarly for my own product launches.

Lastly, I’d also like to cast my vote for the niche/blog template suggestions.

Frank and Stephen:

The clock was 8 minutes slow because we setup that page on an older version where the time-offset wasn’t working to correct for a server being at the wrong time. Our server is 8 minutes behind. We didn’t notice until it was an hour till the launch, at which time much colourful language was used. lol.

John.

Thanks everyone for the amazing feedback that you’re providing. And also, if you experienced any issues, I’m very happy that you’re reporting those. This was a test afterall, and your feedback will help us make sure the software works perfectly for you.

Thank you again, and please keep it coming! :-)

Hi John,

I was lucky enough to not see the mishaps. Here’s the story of my experience with SalesBully so far…

After being properly “salted” through you pre-launch blog posts I hit the sales page yesterday around 5pm eastern time.

I read the little blurb from you and noticed the copies left (something like 120-150 ish.) Immediately I thought to myself

“Well there’s got to be more to it than this…”

I couldn’t have been more right. I went through and read the sales page, watched the video, and as a good sales page should… it enticed me more and more. And by the time I had finished the sales page 15 copies had sold.

“Man… this thing is selling” I thought again… I decided I wanted to wait it out over night. I was prepared to be out of luck, but that’s what I set my mind to.

12pm Wednesday - I check the page again (I left it open on my laptop all night) I think there were about 70-80 copies left.

I waited another few hours and continued work on my own product launch. When I hit the tab for the SalesBully page there were only 43 copies left.

“Damn John…”

Then I did something stupid. I clicked the order now link to check out the order page (I have no idea why), looked it over, and then I clicked back to the sales page.

That’s where SalesBully put a hurtin on me. Big time. It was a full Seonage Jujitsu throw across the room… I read the newly rendered text box that informed me I had crossed the line and had only 5 minutes left to buy at the discount.

The rest is history… I purchased and I’m jumping up and down about the potential its bringing to my launch. Thank you.

Hello John
How can i become a aff ?

I was on the fence on buying Sales Bully. When I went back to the sales page to think over my decision and was INTIMIDATED into buying the script. I felt the pressure to buy and psychologically roughed up!

The impression I got from Sale Bully was:
You better buy or else…

I can’t wait to mentally @&%$ slap all those “lookie lous” & “tire kickers” and turn them into paying customers.

I noticed that the launch data has been pushed out another week. Does that mean pre-launch buyers have to wait an extra week to get the product?

John - when do we get our purchased license? I want to try it on a mini product launch asap. Thanks, Peter.

John,

SalesBully looks awesome, its killing me waiting for the release. I’m always trying to grab that “edge” in my niche and SalesBully is already looking to be a valuable weapon in my online arsenal.
